Facebook. It's really not that bad, is it?
I don’t get the ongoing hate-fest people have with Facebook. People act like it’s become some unmanageable beast that vomits unwanted marketing content on them 24/7.
Here’s a snippet from something I read today:
Once the monetization process began, different ad units were extended, new page layouts, timelines, sponsorships and paid/promoted posts. Multiple vehicles - all designed at one thing – allowing brands (that you don’t care about in the least) to capture your attention again.
This is not my experience with Facebook at all. Of the first 10 items in my feed right now, 9 are from friends and 1 is from a group that I ‘liked’. I don’t get content from companies or organizations that I have not liked. Ever. Do you? If so, how often? And is it really enough to 'ruin’ your total experience?
For me, Facebook is still a great way to get custom content delivered by people and organizations I like. It’s a great way to stay in touch with people. And it’s a great way to meet new people as well.
Could someone do a better job than Facebook? Sure. But they haven’t yet. MySpace is trying to bring sexy back with the help of JT, but I’ll believe it when I see it. Pinterest is cool but offers none of the social connection that Facebook brings. And Twitter is much more of a pure content delivery and meme creation experience.
Facebook is still the hub of it all. It’s still the only true, complete social experience. If you have to deal with the occasional unwanted post or unsolicited request to get that experience, so what?
You’re still not paying a dime for any of it.
