Fun and games
I saw a glimmer of hope on Sunday.
Did you catch it?
As the game wore on
and the commercials kept us from our pee breaks,
I noticed a weird sensation on my face.
The muscles near my mouth were activated,
gently lifting each corner upwards
until there was simply no denying it:
I was smiling.
Bill Murray, giddily exploring Punxsutawney with his furry little friend.
John, Rachel and Chris hamming it up with Big Papi in Boston.
Jason Momoa, getting small in his SoCal abode.
Y'all got me.
Sure, there were frequent clunkers (I see you Pop Tarts)
that broke the smiling spell,
but overall, I was pleased with the trend.
After years of false purpose and mushy manifestos,
We were having fun again.
Bravo.
Now, it’s time to bring that spirit into our agencies,
to bring the fun back to our day to day.
It’s the only way we can save ourselves
from the number crunching madness
that has infected this business for years.
Our work needs to be more creative than ever
just to get noticed these days, let alone remembered.
And that cannot happen in assembly-line conditions.
We need camaraderie.
We need trust.
We need laughter.
God, do we need laughter.
So, how do we make it happen?
I’m not quite sure,
but I suggest we all start by having a Snickers.
