Pinterest - Girly distraction or creative sparkplug?
I’ll admit it. I’ve gone over to the soft side. I’ve joined Pinterest.
I’ve been on there for a couple of months now and I have to say, for the most part, that I’m a big fan.
Yes, it’s girly. I’ve seen more shots of A-line skirts and strappy sandals than is probably healthy for a grown man.
But still, I really dig it.
As a creative person, you get stuck all the time. And most of us have our tricks for getting unstuck. We take a walk. We go to lunch. We do a few shots. Whatever.
Those are all great. But sometimes, in a pinch, I’ll do something much simpler—I’ll check out Pinterest.
At first, I found the whole layout chaotic and overwhelming. But over time, I’ve grown used to it and discovered just how inspiring it can be. A quick scroll down its estrogen laden pages reveals a world of interest and intrigue. It’s fascinating to see what makes other people tick. From food to fashion, architecture to adventure travel, I’m constantly seeing the world through someone else’s eyes.
And that’s the key to creativity. My friend and former co-worker Nate Archambault had a great post on this subject just a few weeks ago. We need to get outside of our snug little advertising bubble if we want to break through to new levels of creativity.
And Pinterest, as girly as it can be, helps.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to check out a few episodes of Man vs. Wild. See if I can’t get my testosterone level back up a bit.
