DesuckiFive Friday - March 29, 2024
Happy Friday, everyone. It’s that time again… five bite-sized bits crafted to squeeze some of the suck out of your work life. Hope you enjoy. If you do, please feel free to share this with friends, family, coworkers, etc. If you don't enjoy it, please pass along to your mortal enemy.
1. DesuckifyWork™ Podcast
What happens if a company doesn’t pay attention to its culture? Chances are you’ve found out, the hard way.
Companies who ignore culture create the worst kind of culture by default. One filled with chaos, politics and a general sense that no one knows what the hell is going on.
Nicole Mahoney—founder and CEO of Break the Ice Media, a marketing agency focused on travel and tourism—knows exactly what’s going on. Because she has carefully curated a culture based on shared values and purpose. One that provides support through coaching and mentoring. And one that celebrates people as individuals and as a team.
2. Desuckifier spotlight - Jocelyn Brady
A brilliant, funny and delightfully odd human who shows up as herself in everything she does. Jocelyn brings fun and play into her work as a brain coach, so you can get rid of the dumb stories in your head and come up with better ones that make your head, heart and spleen smile.
3. Desuckified Book Reco
Unflubbify your Writing by Sara Rosinsky
Ever get scolded by the grammar police after sharing a post you thought was brilliant? “You just dangled a participle, dude!” Yeah, well, Sara is not that person at all. Instead of berating us into better writing habits, she pokes fun at the most common mistakes, creates clever mnemonics to help us remember weird rules and adds a dash of snark to her usage examples. One of my faves: “She had insured each of her three husbands for a million dollars before they died of mysterious gastrointestinal problems.”
4. Desuckified Tip of the Week
Relentless comparison to others is poison. Social media is often the delivery device. And we ingest it willingly, even gleefully at times. When I get a particularly bad case of the “I suck and everyone else is so much better than meeeeees” it helps to step away from the device and do literally anything else that can occupy your mind fully. If that something else happens to be eating a cookie and pondering its joyful journey from the plate to your piehole, so be it.
My favorite cookie is my Mom’s ginger raisin cookie. It’s like a mouthful of Christmas any time of the year. Hire me as a coach and I might be able to convince her to share the recipe.
5. Desuckified Learning from the Week
“You're not looking for another job, you're looking for another life.”
From Paul Millerd author of The Pathless Path. These words really hit me. I think that’s the core of what I’m trying to do with the DesuckifyWork™ movement. To help people create a better life, by making the 8+ hours per day we spend working more joyful, meaningful and, dare I say, fun.
Life’s too short to do work that sucks. Click below to set up a free 30-minute Desuckified Discovery Session.
